18 Reasons Why I Pre-Ordered A PS3

This will soon be mine

advertisement

Just hear me out...

  1. $0 down at Lik-Sang
  2. Can cancel pre-order at anytime
  3. I believe Sony, even with all their mistakes, is still the console gaming leader, hands down
  4. I own a PS2 and and PSP
  5. I'm a High Definition Junkie and the PS3 is a decent (tongue-in-cheek) investment in High Definition DVD capability
  6. I'm an early adopter
  7. Gran Turismo HD
  8. I'm a gadget junky
  9. The XBox360 has very few "next-gen" titles. Dead Rising, Ghost Recon 3: Advanced Warfighter, and Fight Night Round 3 are the only ones that impressed me. I feel the PS3 may have more, even with a limited launch
  10. Gamefly. Nuff said
  11. Definitely not for the interface
  12. My belief that each console has its own killer titles
  13. I'm a gadget junky :)
  14. I'm not close-minded to technology. I use Windows and Mac OS X. I own a PS2 and an XBox 360
  15. I can afford it
  16. My wife approves
  17. I don't foresee myself buying a Nintendo Wii (to each his own, Nintendo games don't appeal to me)
  18. eBay backup plan :P

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

My #1 reason to buy a PS3 is MGS4. Therefore I don't need to buy one until late 2007.

MGS4 and Final Fantasy 13 will eventually lead me to getting the PS3 as well, but for once I'm skipping a launch purchase on it.

But the way you play Wii games seems so much more developed than either PS3 or Xbox360. I'm sure the wand will make game play much more enjoyable.

The Wii's appeal for me is its innovation with their approach to gaming. Their avatars and online system seems similiar to Microsoft but is better since you can play with your actual avatars, and not just gamer pictures. The controllers are a refreshing change. They're doing everything right and will most likely be the best seller this holiday season. Just not for me.... yet.

Maybe a killer title will change my mind about the Wii a bit later but for now, it doesn't look that way.

    No. There's one reason why you've pre-ordered a PS3.

    1. You want one

That there is a list of the justifications you're telling yourself to make yourself feel better. Apart from selling it on eBay (#18), which isn't even your intention, you don't have a single compelling reason to buy a PS3 on launch.

The PS3 does two things. It plays games, and it plays Blu-Ray DVD movies.

If it were for the movies (#5), and you are such an early adopter (#6) and you can afford it (#15), then you'd probably have a Blu-Ray player by now, if that were what's really blowing your skirt up about the PS3.

You list one game (#7) which doesn't even come out until some time next year and a video game rental service (#10) as reasons, yet you feel that Sony's still in control here (#3). Based on what? You only list one game that you're interested in, is that it? Sounds like you're flying on blind faith here, mate.

I also don't understand what a PS2 and a PSP has to do with it, are they making you buy a PS3 by throwing disc read errors every time you try to play a game, or just generally being a useless piece of handheld crap?

Oh, wait, (#4) is meant to enlighten us to your fanboy status, right? Now I see, it's not that there are any games that you want to play on the PS3 at launch, or that Blu-Ray is really that compelling to you, it's just a mindless decision based on lust for a product that hasn't proven itself to be of any use whatsoever.

If I were you, I'd go and do a #2 right now. Keep your money and buy one when you actually have some proper reasons.

And I apologize for my obnoxious comment. I really don't have anything against you, or your decision. I just don't see any compelling reason to rush out for a PS3, and I see that you don't, either. The PS3 might be a fine investment which will keep you amused for the next decade, but I think caution, rather than enthusiasm should be exercised towards it right now. If there aren't even any games you want to play, why drop 5-600$ on something that might come out with good games? Why not wait for the good games to come out, then blow your wad? Maybe it's me that's crazy.

Vincent, I am totally with you here.

I'm picking up my bought-from-eBay Xbox 360 from the post office this afternoon (with GRAW and Call of Duty 2), and I'm planning on asking for a Wii from my aunt for Christmas (she visits every few years and drops in with a big gift, and I'm not about to ask her to shell out $600), and buying a PS3 when first-gen kinks are worked out and the mad-rush-at-console-launch dies away.

All of these systems have such spectacular games coming out, oh mama.

Between Gears of War, Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, Viva Pinata (don't laugh), MGS4, Resistance: Fall of Man, Call of Duty 3, Forza Motorsport 2, Twilight Princess, R6 Vegas, Lair, gaahhhhhh the list goes on and on!

Anyway, 2007 will be a spectacular year for videogaming. I can't wait.

You might notice that Madden 2007 is listed and I claim its exclusive, this is because if you read about it, while it shares a lot with the other consoles, the control schema is so radically different and exciting, as well as new play modes, such as backyard 2-on-2 that it really is an exclusive title for the content you receive. 18. eBay backup plan :P - agreed

As you can see while I agree with you on 6 of your reasons (which is probably why I have it pre-ordered as well) there are many points of yours that I do not agree with, do not understand and a couple you are just contradict yourself on. I have a PS3 pre-ordered from Lik-Sang, but if I cannot get it on day one and resell it on ebay, I will be canceling my order. Not to say I don't think the PS3 will be a good system one day, but it is not worth the money for me since I don't have a 1080p TV and are interested in 0 day one games. I will wait for some games like Final Fantasy to come out and hopefully for the price to drop, as well as hopefully purchasing a new TV before then. As for this year and the near future my investment will be spent on the Wii which I'm incredibly excited about, due to their innovation, price, and exclusive titles!

Thanks for the response! Let me see if I can clear some things up.

        3. I believe Sony, even with all their mistakes, is still the console gaming leader, hands down

define "leader", if its most profitable, then Nintendo makes more money, if its most innovative, then Nintendo leads there as well, if its overall most games, Nintendo leads there too (dating back to NES), if you mean, currently the most popular, Sony is correct

I mean leader as in marketshare and games. My reason for stating this is to counter people's beliefs that Sony is dead. The PS2 is still the best selling console.

        4. I own a PS2 and and PSP

Don't know why this is a reason to buy PS3

This was asked in a previous comment. I stated this because I have invested in PS2 games which will have (some) compatibilty. As for the PSP, there is much anticipation of integration between the PSP and the PS3. So this was more of an investment statement.

        5. I'm a High Definition Junkie and the PS3 is a decent (tongue-in-cheek) investment in High Definition DVD capability

for those fortunate enough to have a 1080p TV, I can see why you'd want a PS3, so that you can finally use that exspensive TV you bought

I'm not on the 1080p bandwagon. Having seen 1080p source and output, my eyes can't tell the difference. I'm more interested in 1080i DVD playback and gaming (which I get now with my XBox 360 as well). Samsung DLPs are quite affordable and I'm loving mine.

        7. Gran Turismo HD

Is this the one that you have to buy the game and then buy tracks and vehicles seperately, or is that Gran Turismo 5, I get confused

I'm confused too. I don't think Sony even knows :) I just love Gran Turismo. I know that's it not going to be available at launch, but I'm really excited. I'll agree that it's not really a good reason to pre-order but it is a reason to own a PS3 for me.

        9. The XBox360 has very few "next-gen" titles. Dead Rising, Ghost Recon 3: Advanced Warfighter, and Fight Night Round 3 are the only ones that impressed me. I feel the PS3 may have more, even with a limited launch

PS3 will not have more at first, the reason 360 doesn't have many is because mostly only exclusive titles were made next-gen, since the 360 is the only next-gen system out

Well I believe the PS3 will. This is pure opinion and speculation on my part.

        10. Gamefly. Nuff said

How does this argue for PS3 versus Wii, XBox360?

Keep in mind, the entire article is not written to justify the PS3 versus the other consoles even though I have made a couple points about that. I mentioned Gamefly because I don't have to purchase any launch titles. This point was made as a standalone justification for a next-gen console. This same benefit applies to XBox360 and Wii. Gamefly just rocks.

        12. My belief that each console has its own killer titles

Once again, How does this argue for PS3 versus Wii, XBox360?

Not a competition point. Some people wonder why consumers buy more than one console. I have a XBox360, so why get a PS3 or a Wii? This is a reason why I pre-ordered, because I believe the PS3 will have its own killer titles.

        14. I'm not close-minded to technology. I use Windows and Mac OS X. I own a PS2 and an XBox 360

Don't know what you mean by this?

See above point. I'm the type of person that uses different technologies. Some people are all Sony. Some people are all Microsoft. Some people are all Apple. Some people are all Nintendo. I'm not. This point was stated to tell you a bit about me and my technology habits. It is a reason why I pre-ordered. I'm a sucker for good technology, no matter who the company is.

        17. I don't foresee myself buying a Nintendo Wii (to each his own, Nintendo games don't appeal to me)

Yes, to each his own, however in your earlier point you said that all consoles have their own killer titles, Nintendo is not an exception, and unlike other consoles they have a killer app for every genre (except maybe RPG) - FPS - "Metroid Prime 3", Action/Adventure - Zelda "Twilight Princess", Sports - "Madden 2007", Party - "Mario Party", Platform - "Super Mario Galaxy" as well as many many more, speaking of which all games listed are exclusive. You might notice that Madden 2007 is listed and I claim its exclusive, this is because if you read about it, while it shares a lot with the other consoles, the control schema is so radically different and exciting, as well as new play modes, such as backyard 2-on-2 that it really is an exclusive title for the content you receive.

Yes and those features with Madden may appeal to a lot of people. Just not me. Don't get me wrong, I like the where the Nintendo Wii is going. Just because I won't use it doesn't mean I think it sucks. Nintendo's killer titles just don't appeal to me. It's a personal preference that I have. I've tried to like it, but I just didn't.

I have a PS3 pre-ordered from Lik-Sang, but if I cannot get it on day one and resell it on ebay, I will be canceling my order.

I have a similar approach. If the price and ship date are too outrageous (I'm talking $800-$900 for the system) then I'll put away my credit card and cancel. I have a suspicion that due to the very small supply that will be available, Lik-Sang may do just that.

Not to say I don't think the PS3 will be a good system one day, but it is not worth the money for me since I don't have a 1080p TV and are interested in 0 day one games.

Good point. I already have a 1080i TV and am interested in 0 day games (Untold Legends, Ridge Racer 7, and F.E.A.R) and Blu-Ray movies. Gamefly and Netflix will help my wallet with these as well.

Again, I appreciate the insightful response.

I understand there will be multiple offerings. One with cars and tracks and one without. I'll most likely get the one with cars and tracks bundled.

I'm a little behind the times: I am just now playing through GT4 (picked up for $10 used) and I must say, it is darn pretty already.

You know that's just a prettier version of GT 4, right?

In all fairness, you could make that comment about a lot of games out there; video game companies make tons of money on prettier versions of predecessors, and it has been going on since the days of the SNES sequels of NES games.

GT HD is going to use the same tracks as GT 4.

Video game companies don't typically make things prettier and resell them; franchises like FF, Mario, Zelda, etc, are apart of a series, each with its own plot and objectives. Jax 3 is just a prettier version of Jax & Daxter? No, it's another installment.

Of course cars will be added--new models have since come out and must be included in the updated game. But if the courses are the same, isn't it pretty much the same @!$%#? If you took Link and put him in a game to save Princess Peach, it's still a Mario game.

                  - 750 cars for $0.50-$1.00
                  - 50 tracks for $1.50-$4.50

Wouldn't you want AT LEAST fifteen tracks? Sure you CAN just get one car and spend all the money on tracks, but after adding the cost of the base (and pretty much contentless) disc, the premium (benefit of the doubt $15 but most likely at least $20) would run you $60 (assume $3 x 15 + $15).

I don't care since I'll be renting it.

So I might spend $10 on cars and tracks. Gamefly FTW. That's plenty good until Gran Turismo 5 comes out.

Gran Turismo 5 is expected to be out in 2008. EVERY game in the GT series has been late, so this means chances are it will be out 2009. Until then, have fun playing Gran Turismo 4 in 1080p on your 1080i TV, except this time you will be paying for individual cars/tracks. Don't get me wrong, I loved Gran Turismo 4, but this paying for content, is pure BS. I hope it comes back and bites them so that everyone realizes how bad of an idea this truly is.

Oh I'll have fun regardless. $10 isn't so bad initially. Considering I'm used to paying for additional content (MMORPGs), this is nothing new to me. The micropayment system is a paradigm shift for console users, but this is the future of gaming.

Does it suck? Of course it does. Anytime one has to pay for content that you feel should have already been there is not a good situation. This is what people who refuse to pay for MMORPGs have been saying for years. Battlefield 2 is another good example. The "expansions" they release cost a pretty penny and a lot of people feel they aren't worth it. "Map packs" and "Quest packs" are also becoming popular with the XBox360. Remember the useless Horse people paid for in Oblivion on the XBox360?

Yes you're right about GT5 being late, I am very aware of that. To give us something in the meantime is something new you gotta admit. They usually just make you play the previous title until the new one comes out. For them to introduce an interim title is a something they haven't done before (that I can remember).

I think the positives outweigh the negatives in this situation for me personally, but I definitely can see your concerns.

I'll wait for when it gets to current (or close to) PS2 price levels. My PC and 360 satisfy me enough for now.

I'm more interested in the PS exclusive games anyway and we won't see many of those (i.e. God of War 3) until later in its life.

Is it just me, or are reasons 1, 2, and 18 not so much "reasons to pre-order a PS3" as much as "reasons why I won't regret it if it's a monumentally stupid decision"?

To each his own, though. I don't see any particular reason to pick apart your reasoning, since everyone has different tastes. I want a PS3 as well; after I get my Wii and 360. Kutaragi keeps claiming the PS3 will have a 10 year life span. Maybe after 8 years I can afford it.

Well reasons 1 and 2 are reasons to pre-order because it is an attractive deal. $0 down and no penalty for cancelling are both compelling reasons to pre-order. 18 however is exactly what it sounds like. It's a backup plan. If none of my expectations are met, there's always eBay.

One reason I'm getting a PS3: To make a grand or so when I sell it off.

                            :D

Preorders of it will probably be pushing a grand.

You're gonna eBay the thing for two G's?

I seeit going up to maybe $1200. Not much more than that, unless you're the next-gen version of lucky bastard who eBay'd a PS2 for $1500.

eBay will be a profitable way to go no doubt. It's going to be very tempting.

I actually stood in line at Best Buy all night for a ps2 and I preordered one. You can bet where the "extra" one went :)

And then, Lik-Sang goes out of Business. No PS3 for me. :(

                                Gee, thanks Sony.

Oh my gosh, I can't believe Lik-Sang went out of business (no sarcasm)!!! They are one of two huge importers that I know of (Play-Asia being the other one). I heard about legal trouble with Sony, but I had no idea they would go out of business. SUCKS.
